As a family, the loss of our mother has rocked the very foundations of our everyday life. A proud Scot, she adored the bagpipes, particularly Amazing Grace, and of course, the Flower of Scotland. Given that she passed away under the Covid restrictions, we knew that so many of the traditions and usual rites of a funeral would be out of reach for mum. However, the one thing all of us said immediately, was we HAVE to try and secure a piper for her. Its the last true and meaningful thing we can do for her, and in the absence of so many of her family and friends who couldn’t attend her funeral, it was a great comfort to everyone who was allowed to attend that John the piper was able to help. He was professional and sensitive. Communicating with him to arrange what songs we wanted and to discuss what the process was, we felt assured, and understood. The trouble was narrowing down the songs to a chosen few, he was very accommodating and took the time to get some background to her life and what was important to mam, so he could match it up with songs to reflect this. On the day, he was punctual and did us all proud, mam especially, playing Amazing Grace, Flower of Scotland and the Skye Boat Song. Everyone commented on what a beautiful tribute it was to mam, and were impressed by how powerful a scene it was for the hearse to be piped into the place by the graveside. I would highly recommend John to anyone looking for an accomplished musician to add an extra layer of wow to any ceremony. Thank you so very much, John. We wish you all the best, and are keeping your number for the memorial service.
